We’ve looked at the molecular gas in a couple objects previously, at both low and high spatial resolution. Now, Manuel Aravena and I extend that work to a large sample of SPT sources, and we’re able to test a couple claims from the literature and look at how the molecular gas has evolved over the history of the universe.
In this paper, Matthieu Bethermin assembles a wealth of data we’ve acquired on one particular galaxy to present a comprehensive picture of the conditions of the interstellar medium. He demonstrates the power of gravitational lensing as a tool to learn about the detailed properties of distant, dusty galaxies.
Stellar Masses and Star Formation Rates of Lensed, Dusty, Star-forming Galaxies from the SPT Surv...
ADS: Ma, Gonzalez, Spilker et al. 2015 arXiv: Ma, Gonzalez, Spilker et al. 2015 One of the most fundamental parameters of a galaxy is its stellar mass. Unfortunately, it’s been very hard to measure these for the SPT dusty galaxies I’ve been studying – since they’re lensed by foreground galaxies, the light from the foreground galaxy can totally […]
ADS: Spilker et al. 2015 ArXiv: Spilker et al. 2015 Stars are born from giant clouds of gas made mostly of molecular hydrogen. One of the best ways to observe this gas indirectly is to use the carbon monoxide (CO) molecule. It’s even better if you can observe it at high resolution – this can tell you […]
ADS: Gullberg et al. 2015 arXiv: Gullberg et al. 2015 This paper presents part of our comprehensive follow-up of the SPT dusty galaxies. In this case, we were interested in looking at the emission from ionized carbon atoms, the [CII] fine structure transition at 158um. This line is usually the brightest one in dusty star-forming […]
SPT0538-50: Physical Conditions in the Interstellar Medium of a Strongly Lensed Dusty Star-formin...
ADS: Bothwell et al. 2013b arXiv: Bothwell et al. 2013b This paper presents a comprehensive, multi-wavlength view of one SPT dusty galaxy which we’ve studied in a lot of detail. The goal was to pull together everything we knew about this particular galaxy to demonstrate the level of detail you can get for a large […]
